Fire Prevention Week sponsored by the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) has some tips on reducing potential hazards with the cooler season approaching.

Although, the resources focus on home fires, it’s also important to review your station and facilities on the job to make sure that everything is up to code.

  • Inspect your heating system.
  • Check & clean chimney, vents, & plenum ventilation.
  • Ensure supplemental heating devices are in good working order.
  • Verify that the proper extension cords are rated for your device.
  • Replace batteries in your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors when you change the clocks.

As the national week comes to a close, take time to review the above items and checklist [PDF] for your safety.  Also available from the NFPA, is a quiz to help spark ideas to prevent fires.
